Provence is located in the southeast of France. It is a region with charming scenery, lovely small villages, and a long history. Beyond enjoying wonderful cuisine and sipping wine in a luxurious setting, you must visit the following locations.
The hilltop villages of the Luberon
The Luberon region is home to small villages clinging to the foothills, creating a peaceful beauty that feels like traveling back in time. Moreover, tucked between these villages are serene and romantic vineyards.
This area is a popular tourist destination when visiting Provence. Each village in the Luberon region has its own characteristics and beauty. From Bonnieux with its stunning clock tower to Gordes and Roussillon, these are all villages listed among The Most Beautiful Villages in France.
Aix-en-Provence, the quintessence
Aix-en-Provence is the quintessential city of the Provence region, blending history, pleasant weather, and luxury. Here, you find the wonderful warmth characteristic of the South of France.
There are many tourist attractions in Aix-en-Provence, from friendly cafes to vibrant streets. When visiting, be sure to drop by Les Deux Garçons, a place once frequented by Picasso and Edith Piaf. Also, do not miss the architectural masterpiece – Cathédrale Saint-Sauveur, Cézanne’s workshop, and the Musée Granet, where you can admire artworks by some of history’s greatest masters.
Lavender fields
The lavender fields in Provence are an unmissable destination. Located in the Luberon, near the towns of Valensole and Sault, when the lavender blooms, the fields turn into an endless sea of purple. Under the gentle sunshine of the South of France, the faint scent of lavender permeates the air, creating an unforgettable experience for visitors.
The best time to see the fields in Provence is around early July each year. At this time, the flowers have just bloomed, making it perfect for sightseeing and capturing dreamy photos.
The city of Avignon
Avignon is located on the left bank of the Rhône River. It is one of the most beautiful walled cities in France. Over 700 years ago, Avignon was the seat of the Catholic Popes.
Avignon is famous for its medieval town and the Palais des Papes. This is the largest Gothic palace in Europe, built in the 14th century and recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site since 1995.
The town of Avignon has many museums, such as the Musée du Petit Palais, which displays artworks by Sandro Botticelli and Vittore Carpaccio. It also boasts beautiful churches and the famous Saint-Bénézet Bridge (Pont d’Avignon) stretching across part of the Rhône.
